100 and 200-meter dash
Florence Griffith Joyner is an American record holder. She ran the 100m in just 10.49 in 1988. This record surpassed the previous (which belonged to Evelyn Ashford) by 34 hundredths of a second. She ran 200m in 21.31 at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Breaking the world record by 37 hundredths of a second in the final.
One year later, in 1989, the athlete left the sport. Florence died of a heart attack at the age of 38.
